===================================

We asked Elad a few questions:

Name an Israeli producer and an Israeli DJ that you really like today.

Jibaro which are Omri Angel and Idan Gavriel (also a talented DJ). It’s true that I’m they’re friend but regardless of this they’re making great music. Theo Parrish played one of their tracks in Berlin recently and I believe they have great potential.

C’mon Elad – Why “Zebra” and not “Kangaroo”?

Well, because that 1997 bus had a “Zebra Toothpaste” commercial on its side and not a “Kangaroo Toothpaste” commercial. It’s not that we don’t like Kangaroos but in time the Zebra name got extra meaning. It’s the unique Zebra black-white pattern which never repeats itself, just like our music, or that dazzling feeling when looking at a bunch of Zebras together. It’s also the fact that Zebras are considered risk taking animals which run ahead of all other animal in a brave (but also borderline stupid at times) way. Hey! No guts – No glory, right? So Zebra it is.

For years in a row your “T-Break” Breakbeat parties provided loads of memorable moments. Pick one special party that you liked the most.

Definitely the Freestylers@Zamir, 2004. It had many “firsts” to it. It was our first really BIG party, our first party without the help from the “Sofabeat” club, the first time we aimed at an artist of this caliber, the first flyer designed by my love Shoshi Barbi (who I met at that party for the first time) and of course the first time our PR was so intense. At any given moment there were 3-4 people with the party’s t-shirts in key Tel-Aviv spots. This party was an all-in bet and a great breakthrough to the T-Break project. The atmosphere there was crazy and people kept talking about this party for years.
The most memorable moment in that party for me personally was during my warm-up set when I played the “You got the Love” breaks bootleg done for Candy Staton right before Aston started playing. The entire club is up in the air and Aston just looks at me with a smile and a spark in his eyes and says “I did this bootleg, you know”. I still get goose bumps today when recalling this moment.

A drummer in the “The Greek”, Breakbeat Funk and Disco probably are key points in your musical timeline. For the naked eye there seems to be a big change from one to the other. What lead you to make such changes?

Have you ever heard of a DJ with ADHD? Well, I don’t think I have that but I do get bored quite fast and never stay where I get bored. I enjoy switching djing styles and also genres, practice more and more techniques. It keeps the entire djing constantly challenging. I always liked Funk. Disco, House, Breaks – these were all born of Funk. Soul, Funk’s subtle brother, came later on with all of its derivatives. In the year 2000 when I went to my first ever Disco party I was just blown away. It felt like I’ve been there before in a previews life. Disco grabbed me and hypnotized me immediately. Later on I became a resident of those parties for a year and a half where I played many “Paradise Garage” and “Loft” classics to soldiers who came there hoping to listen to hits. Then I moved to a new path derived from Funk – Breaks, where I also tried to keep the music as funky as possible. In recent years I reinvented myself as a DJ playing Disco, Soulful House and many other interesting things. I just tossed away my entire music collection and started all over again. It’s a very exciting process where I do things for the first time again, including asking promoters to let me play in their parties, playing in small bars and basically the entire “new Dj path”. This is really fun and exciting and includes dealing with the way people had me tagged in their heads, which suddenly becomes irrelevant and gets them all guessing.
In “The Greek” I was a drummer but did Breakbeat and Jungle rhythms. If you listen to the band’s biggest hit you’ll find an outrageously broken rhythm for a radio hit of that magnitude.

Where was this set recorded and with what equipment?

It was recorded in my room live in a single take – edit free. I used two turntables, one laptop and Serato 3. All tracks but one are originally on vinyl but were recorded to my laptop using 24bit wave. There’s this one track which is played from an actual vinyl because I suddenly felt like playing it but never got to importing it to the laptop.

Tell a about the idea behind this set. Is there a moment in it you like the most?

The idea was give room for several genres I like and to the atmosphere we’re trying to create in our new line of roof-parties called “Zebra Dayz”. Although most of the crowd wants to hear more clubby electronic sounds, which is why I played enough of that during our first party, this set is all about what I want with no other influence whatsoever, which is a privilege only foreign DJs have when they come here to play. My favorite moment is when Idan K., and Afrobeat producer just came to visit while I was recording. It triggered an “African” moment in the set which I really like.

Vinyl, CDs or MP3? Explain

MP3’s are a big NO to me, CDs aren’t comfortable at all and vinyl is a bit limiting but an eternal live which we always return to. I love the digital options of cueing, loops etc as well as the ability to instantly pull out whichever track you want without the nerve wrecking search in the vinyl case. This is a critical factor for an intuitive DJ like me who doesn’t like to plan ahead. After many attempts I found the most convenient setup for me. I buy wave files and vinyls if what I want isn’t available otherwise and record everything to the computer using a special cartridge and needle in the best available quality. I have a portable hard drive which is attached to the laptop with all the files and everything is controlled using two turntables with Serato.

A decade after the millennium Breakbeat is very different from what it used to be closer to the year 2000. Do you like its new direction and do you think it will ever become as strong as it used to be or is it doomed to be secondary to other genres?

To be completely honest I have no idea what’s going on in the Breakbeat scene nowadays. I’m really far from it. From what I see there’s mostly funky breaks, based on bootlegs based on funk tracks with repetitive and boring sampling. The genre which started as innovative and fresh got stuck somewhere when most producers started breaking the barrier towards mainstream started creating electro-mutations and completely lost the underground vibe. I believe this genre will keep on wondering in the twilight zone for some time and only if a new generation of producers will take it to the next level we may see it rise up again.

Imagine yourself 10 years from now and describe what you see.

I see myself sitting at home in front of the laptop, the kids are doing their homework in their room and I’m probably answering the questions for Israel Underground’s 3016th PodIUmix.

Fill in the blanks: “In past life I was probably _______”

Some king’s jester or a black dancer in “Studio 54″.

When and what brought you to start spinning your first vinyls?

When I was 13 I already had a company called “DJ Mix” with two partners and we recorded mixtapes. It was back when tapes still ruled and I had one with pitch control. My father used to do parties as well and I was his DJ. At the age of 15 I already played three times a week in dubious clubs. It was 1989.

“Zebra Music” was founded in 1997 and provides music services to whoever needs such services – from the most updated clubbers to aunts and uncles in weddings. In each case the DJ has a different status. As a DJ who enjoys all worlds do you believe a wedding DJ is lesser than a club DJ? Or perhaps better?

I think people should combine the two sides and actually this is where the market seems to be heading. I never felt uncomfortable with the title “wedding DJ”. On the contrary, this is a field where your ability as a DJ is measured on a daily basis. A club DJ’s mistake will usually go unnoticed or easily forgotten while in a wedding the slightest mistake can empty the dance floor. In past times people used to treat a club DJ who does weddings as well as if he or she were leprous and I felt that as well a few times. However this field pays better for the skills compared to the underground where there’s hardly ever any money. In the years we’ve been a part of Zebra Music we greatly improved the wedding DJ’s image and branded him (or her) as someone who can also be sexy and with some clubby appeal and not necessarily the fake blond who only plays cheesy remixes to radio hits.
